How To Lose Weight

Probiotics and Weight Loss

This article provides in depth information on Probiotics and Weight Loss.

According to a survey by the NHNE (National Health and Nutrition Examination), about 64.5% of American adults are overweight. The survey revealed that the respondents ranged from being 4.5 lbs to over 32 lbs overweight. Although particularly significant in the US due to our lifestyle choices, weight control is also an important concept worldwide. Scientific studies have revealed that overweight people are at a greater risk of developing some diseases including diabetes, stroke, gout, heart problems and osteoarthritis. Thus, weight loss in overweight people is imperative to staying healthy. Several weight loss methods have been used but recently a connection has been established between probiotics and weight loss.

What Are Probiotics?

According to the WHO and FAO definitions, probiotics are live microbes that provide health benefits to a host when administered in appropriate amounts. Probiotics are microorganisms that are similar to those found normally in the gastrointestinal tract. Normally, the gastrointestinal tract requires certain microorganisms (bacteria for the most part) in order to function. These bacteria are also referred to as “friendly bacteria” because of the functions they carry out. Probiotics can be found in foods and also as supplements and consist largely of two groups of bacteria: Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium.

Probiotics and Weight Loss

Probiotics have been known to confer several healthful benefits on the human body. They are used in treating several disease and/or conditions such as IBS, skin infections, infectious diarrhea and vaginal infections. Their use in weight control is relatively new and research is still ongoing. According to a recent study carried out by researchers in Stanford University, people with no need for weight loss generally have a larger number of friendly bacteria than those who are overweight. This further strengthens the link between probiotics and weight loss because it means that increasing the number of friendly bacteria in the body can help keep the weight down.

How Probiotics Help with Weight Control

The major mechanism through which probiotics help in shedding weight is by reducing the amount of glucose that gets absorbed by the body form the digestive tract. Normally the body requires energy mostly in the form of glucose to carry out its activities. The body absorbs the glucose during the process of digestion and utilizes it for its functions. The remaining is then stored in the body as fat. Probiotics help to keep the weight down by using up a large percentage of the glucose from food for their activities. This means the body has less glucose that it can absorb for its use. This affects the storage of glucose as fat in the body and eventually, the body begins to shed excess the weight stored up as fat.

Sources of Probiotics

Probiotics are found in natural fermented foods such as yogurts, aged cheese, kefir, kimchi, pickles, shoyu and several others. They are also found in supplements such as Sweetease and Gr8-Dophilus. It has been proven that probiotics contribute to weight loss and also improve the overall health of the body.
